A half beef with a deposit means: the buyer puts money down, you set the harvest date, and the final bill comes from the hanging weight. Checked on their own pricing pages and seller FAQs on 2026-10-17.

One by one

What each one does well, in fairness, and where we differ.

Barn2Door

$119 a month ($99 yearly) and up · $399 to $599 setup · a 1% to 3% "merchant support" fee on your sales, on top of card fees · no free trial

What they do well

  • Sell by weight with a deposit and a final charge, on the entry plan.
  • Subscriptions, a point of sale and a built website on every plan.
  • A person who sets you up (that is what the setup fee pays for).

Where we differ

  • No setup fee and no fee on your sales. Their first year costs $1,587 to $4,187 before card fees; ours is $0 to $1,490.
  • Try everything free for 14 days; keep the Free plan if that is all you need.
  • Your data is yours: download everything in one click, any time, including after you leave.

Pick them if you want someone to set it all up and you sell enough that 1% to 3% does not sting. Pick us if you would rather keep that money and open on your phone this week.

Local Line

$109 a month ($87 yearly) and up · no setup fee · no commission · subscriptions from $159 a month (yearly) · 7-day trial

What they do well

  • One inventory across your store, CSA, wholesale and markets; 50+ reports.
  • Charges the real packed weight on the card after packing.
  • Free migration from another platform.

Where we differ

  • Whole and half shares with a deposit, a harvest date and a hanging-weight invoice, from $29 a month.
  • Built for one farm on a phone, not a food hub on a desktop.
  • Repeat orders are on Starter ($29), not the $159 plan.

Pick them if you run a food hub or sell wholesale to restaurants and need the reports. Pick us if you sell your own animals and products to families.

GrazeCart

$89 a month (yearly) for Starter; the other two plans and the card rate are not published · "white-glove" onboarding from $2,000 · 14-day trial

What they do well

  • A very good sell-by-weight checkout for cuts and boxes.
  • Delivery zones, coupons, gift cards, discounted shipping labels.
  • Support people farmers praise.

Where we differ

  • Every price is published. Theirs are not.
  • Whole and half animal sales with a deposit (they do not do these).
  • A Free plan and a $9 plan for a few dozen eggs; GrazeCart starts at $89.

Pick them if you sell many cuts by weight and ship a lot. Pick us if you sell shares, or you want to know the price before you call.

Homegrown

$10 a month (yearly) · no setup fee · no commission · 7-day trial

What they do well

  • Cheap, published, and set up in 15 minutes.
  • A local directory that sends shoppers to vendors.
  • One link for text messages, social posts and a QR code.

Where we differ

  • They cannot sell by weight or take a deposit on a half beef (their words). We can.
  • Our Free plan is $0, and our Small plan is $9 with pickup places, newsletters and the directory.
  • More than 4,500 farms are already in our directory from the USDA's own listings, so buyers near you can find you from day one.

Pick them if you sell jam and eggs at one market and never will sell meat. Pick us if there is any chance you sell a half beef one day: the price is the same or less.

GrownBy

$0 to $130 a month · no setup fee · 2% of every sale · the only one with SNAP/EBT online

What they do well

  • SNAP and EBT online, the first in the category.
  • A free tier and a farmer-owned co-op behind it.
  • Good for CSA shares of vegetables.

Where we differ

  • No cut of your sales. On $30,000 a year their 2% is $600; ours is $0.
  • Meat tooling: shares by the animal, by-weight pricing, cut sheets, processor labels.
  • Prices on one page, not on a second domain.

Pick them if SNAP online matters to your customers today. Pick us if you sell meat, or you would rather not pay 2% forever.

Shopify (and Wix, Squarespace, Square Online)

$29 to $39 a month for a store that sells · Square Online is free at 3.3% + 30c online · nothing farm-specific

What they do well

  • Known, polished, Apple Pay at checkout, thousands of apps.
  • Fine for jerky and honey shipped in a box.

Where we differ

  • A half beef does not fit in a cart: a deposit, a hanging-weight invoice, a cut sheet and a pickup day take three apps and a spreadsheet on Shopify (one of them, CutSheetPro, is $29 a month on top).
  • Pickup at a farmers market with a day and hours, a town stop, a freezer truck: built in.
  • The same price as Shopify Basic, set up on your phone in about 15 minutes, with the farm parts included.

Pick them if you ship shelf-stable goods nationwide and never sell by weight. Pick us if your customers pick up at the farm or a market and a half beef is on the menu.
